‘Surviving and Soccer in Sierra Leone’ (2015) – an Ebola story

Surviving and Soccer in Sierra Leone (2015)

Erison Turay and his mother lost 38 of their relatives to Ebola in Sierra Leone and were left with 15 family orphans to care for. He and his mother overcame their infections, but survivors cannot find jobs and their struggles to live continue on.

To cope, Erison founded the Kenema Ebola Survivors Football Club. Their first games were mens and womens teams versus the Fighters–the healthcare workers who saved them. Says Erison,

“I think so long that I have a life, I must have hope.”

– Ebola survivor Erison Turay

This 12 minute NY Times documentary is written and directed by Ben C. Solomon, who reported that for him, following up with Erison one year later was one of the most important stories of their Ebola coverage. Worth your time.
