The easiest way to describe Land of Storms (Viharsarok) is a Hungarian Brokeback Mountain with soccer players. I confess that I watched this movie at 2x speed because of its slow pace and plethora of homophobic violence. There are also a lot of sex scenes and even a 3-way, but the scenes aren’t very sexy.
Writer-Director Ádám Császi uses little dialog in order to tell his story through acts and not words. He calls this minimalism, but it is like watching trees grow while being blind to the forest.
The film fails as a gay soccer player coming of age story, because the characters never really accept themselves and their situations, and basically everyone remains homophobic. Maybe that’s the way it is in Hungary. But it makes for a depressing movie. At least the soccer is okay.
